Eating Out Will Jam You
If you think you're in a bind at 20 pounds or more over your ideal weight and you're eating out three or more times a week, then come talk to me. I know what the problem is. Bottom line, the fast food joints with their high-fat, supersized meals are going to jam you if you're not careful. So are lots of other restaurants, from the soul food joint to the most elegant French restaurant with its butter this and cream that-again, if you're not careful.
Americans, knowing that time is a precious commodity, do everything on the run. We skip breakfast, run errands during lunch hour, and grab something quick before taking our kids to soccer practice at dinner-time.
Whether it's fast food, carry-out, or a sit down restaurant, there are smart choices to make. Here are some tips to help you eat healthier when eating out. You'll find more healthy tips in Dr. Ro's Ten Secrets To Livin' Healthy.
Healthy Eating on the Run Tips:
- Plan ahead where you will eat, consider what healthy meal options are available.
- Think about your food choices for the entire day. If you're planning a special restaurant meal in the evening, have a light breakfast and lunch.
-
Keep single-serve packages of crackers, fruit, peanut butter, soup,or tuna in your desk/car for a quick lunch/snack.
- Choosea baked potato, it offers more fiber, fewer calories and less fat than fries if youskip the sour cream and butter. Top your potato with broccoli and a sprinkle of cheese or salsa.
- Add tomatoes, lettuce peppers or other vegetables to boost the nutrition in sandwiches.
- Go for salads. Just refrain from piling on the high-fat, high sodium salad companions such as eggs, bacon bits, cheese and mounds of fat-laden dressing.
